End the Criminalization of Poverty in Arkansas

Mission Statement

In Arkansas, poverty is being punished like a crime. Every day, people are jailed, lose their jobs, or fall deeper into debt simply because they cannot afford to pay court fines or fees. Others lose their driver’s licenses for non-driving offenses or are arrested for trying to survive through actions like sleeping outside or panhandling. These practices don’t promote justice. They trap people in cycles of poverty and punishment.

Our mission is clear: end the criminalization of poverty in Arkansas. We are building a grassroots movement to stop these harmful policies, reform outdated laws, and demand a justice system rooted in fairness and dignity.

About the Campaign

This campaign was started by a single advocate determined to shine a light on the everyday injustice facing low-income Arkansans. With no institutional backing, this effort is fueled by lived experiences, community stories, and the unwavering belief that no one should be punished for being poor.

Together, we are calling for urgent reform. Whether you’ve been directly impacted or simply believe in fairness, your voice matters. Let’s build a justice system that works for everyone, not just those who can afford it.

Our Goals

We are working to end practices that criminalize poverty through three key reforms:

• Eliminate jail time for unpaid court fines and fees.

• End driver's license suspensions for non-driving offenses.

• Decriminalize survival behaviors like homelessness, panhandling, and petty theft.
